An experiment
This vessel was thrown on the potters wheel from white stoneware clay, trimmed, dried and bisque fired. Glazed in white and turquoise, before firing in a gas kiln to 1000 degrees Celsius. The pot was removed from the kiln when red hot and placed in a bucket of sawdust, which ignited and smoked the areas of bare clay black.
Finally, the cooled pot is thoroughly cleaned to remove any burned remnants.
Please note: Due to the low firing temperature, raku fired ceramic is not fully vitrified. Therefore raku pieces are intended as decorative and should not be used with food, or to hold water. It is also recommended to place on a coaster to protect surfaces against black marks from the smoked base.
Every item is entirely handmade by Emma and there will be some variations in size, shape and finish. Photos are illustrative of the handmade item you will receive. Items sold individually.
